Congressman Ben Chandler made a special visit to Strode Station Elementary to speak to our students about how our government works for them. Strode Stations students were really excited to meet Mr. Chandler and ask questions of whatexactly he does for the citizens of Kentucky. The 5th grade students had been learning about government in their social studies classes. The Congressman began his talk about how he became a Congressman and why Kentucky needs to be represented. He also informed the audience of what his responsibility is to those he represents.
Strode Stations students started out strong when quizzed by the Congressman. When asked such questions as; How many Congressmen does the state of Kentucky have? How many Congressmen and Senators are there in the United States? Strode Station represented with prompt and accurate answers to every question. It was obvious Mr. Chandler was impressed with our student’s knowledge of American Government.
Thanks to Mr. Chandler’s visit, Strode Station students were able to connect their new Social Studies content to the visit with Mr. Chandler. You could see the students faces confirming the relation of Mr. Chandler’s comments and previous lesson’s within their classrooms! Being able to talk with a real a representative of government was the glue thought brought life connections and content together.
Mr. Chandler provided time for students to ask questions. Mr. Chandler provided insightful answers ranging from his political career to why he wants to work in government. Students also inquired about the Independent Party and how it’s impacted the modern day government. They also wanted to know how it personally felt to be a part of the working government and making important decisions. We even had a question of “How long before you are President?” Mr. Chandler was flattered, but he seemed hesitant in declaring just yet!
We want to thank Mr. Chandler for making time for Strode Station and giving our students an excellent understanding of how the government works and mainly how it works for them. Also thank you to Miss Hannah Terry for making this visit possible.
